I am currently working on two projects that are take up almost all of my free time. I am wrapping up one of the pieces (a portrait series on local artists and the old factory they used as a creative space to work) but will be working on the second for a while. This is the reason for fairly few and far between blog posts as of late. Bare with me and ill keep info updated on here about the projects.

The Stratford Square Dance Club had its final dance the other night. Dwindling membership and a lack of interest from younger generations has left the club without enough funding to continue. Some of these people have been dancing with the club for over 40 years. I can only hope to be this spry when im that age...but what dances will we be doing?

My blog has been silent since I posted some of the images I took while in Mexico City. I am coming to the realization that I had a very strong reaction to my experience there and the direction in which I need to take my work. I have ignored the nay sayers and the doubters for as long as I can when it comes to the future of the photojournalist, and I am realizing this is simply irresponsible of me. I cannot naively push ahead with my eyes shut and my earbuds in. We ARE in trouble and if we do not react quickly and with strong conviction, the future of our industry seems dark indeed. I will NOT simply rant on about how awful things are and add to the overwhelming landfill of negativity that occupies every blog and discussion board I come across, because I do believe there are answers to our plight but I must accept the truths that are now inevitable. I will add to the many who have pleaded already, we MUST work together in order to secure a future for what we all are so deeply passionate about. Please take a moment to read Vincent Laforet's article on the matter and allow it to sink in. There isn't a single original thought there and yet it felt like the first time I had actually listened. I hope you will as well...

Neza Dump and Los Andres en La Ciudad de Mexico

These images where made at the Neza Dump in Mexico City while I was attending the Foundry Photojournalism Workshop last week. Along with Ed Linsmier, Carl Kiilsgaard, and Will Widmer, and our fixer, Marco, I tried to get access to a very protected, and lawless community that lives and works at this dump site. After three days of making contacts, asking for permission, and filing intent with the government, we were finally allowed into one small section of the site. I spent the afternoon with the Andres family and was invited into their home. I was able to begin building a connection with them over a few Coronas and my broken spanglish. When we returned the following day to begin shooting again, there was a misunderstanding with one of the other photographers, an angry mob of about 35 men, and an unfortunately tense situation that ended our access to the site. Even though this story is far from completed, the experience was worth the time and effort we put in over the past week. I hope that someday I can return and tell the story of a people who are marginalized by society and often overlooked.

I made this portrait of a member of the Chinese Olympic Boxing Team waiting backstage before his fight about a month ago but just stumbled upon it again. This man was so intense...he stayed locked in that trance for the half hour I was shooting near him and probably longer.

I heard an NPR piece two weeks ago that I have been meaning to find on their site and also post here. Its a great look at how there is a direct correlation between quality photojournalism and fund raising. Siting the situation after the cyclone in Myanmar, along with the disaster relief effort in China, it is clear that the amount of funding both efforts received were directly effected by how much media exposure there was. Check it out if you get a chance and keep it in mind for potential clients down the road...

USA Olympic Boxing Team

The US Olympic boxing team held an invitational with China and Brazil to prep for the games the other night in Bridgeport. Hung out for a bit while they were training also... Nice guys who were mostly smaller than me but could easily break me in half.

So its been a little while since I was able to post anything new. Part of the reason is that I recently lost two family members and so without getting heavy, I would just like to say that they were loved, will be missed, and will not be forgotten. If only more people could hold themselves to the standards of kindness and decency of Tom and Tessy.
